What a change of pace! I came back from South Florida, which had amazing warm weather, to an artic blast in Minnesota. Our world is white again, as it may be for the next six months or so. Despite this I am not deterred and am still motivated to paddle. My go-to paddling spot in the twin cities, especially in the winter, is the Mississipi River. I change up my launch locations but my favorite is the East River Flats right by the east bank of the U of MN.

A wintery Kayak portage. Just a little more snow and I can just drag the Kayak like a sled!

The Banks of the river in this stretch are surprisingly quiet and there is little shoreline development along it.

The drain monster is beginning to form!

All in all I quite enjoy winter paddling. There is excellent solitude, as not many people are willing to get out when the Mercury drops. I also quite enjoy seeing the changes to the natural setting. The river is a haven for waterfowl that overwinter in Minnesota. There are many interesting ice formations that appear and change throughout the winter as well. I will definitely post more on this as the winter changes and progresses!
Over thanksgiving my sister Ashley and I are heading to Utah for Ashley's first backpacking trip in the Grand Staircase/Glen Canyon area. Will try to post a trip report soon after!
